Structures Location Map Books
The Structures Location Map books listed below are intended for use by Main Roads' staff and its contractors or consultants.
These books were created with a geographic information system mapping application to input the structures locations onto special mapping data obtained from other Government agencies. For this reason, the quality and size of these files is very large and not recommended for viewing or downloading if you are using a dial-up Internet service.
If you do experience difficulty viewing or downloading these Structures Location Map Books, contact the Structures Information and Standards Manager on 9323 4421.

Structure Definitions
Definitions for different structures are provided below to ensure the use of the appropriate inventory form and inspection form as well as ensuring the allocation of responsibilities for managing the asset is clear.
- Bridge: a structure (with the exception of gantries) having a clear opening in any span of greater than 3 metres measured between the faces of piers and/or abutments or structures of a lesser span with a deck supported on timber stringers. Note: A traffic-supporting structure that is a combination of bridge and culvert openings is managed as a "Bridge".
- Precast Box Unit Bridge: a specific superstructure bridge type consisting of precast box units of clear opening in any span of greater than 3 metres.
- Culvert: a structure under a road having only clear openings of less than or equal to 3 metres measured between the faces of piers and/or abutments or a pipe shaped structure of any diameter.
- Gantry: an overhead structure spanning a road carriageway for the specific purpose of carrying regulatory, advisory, warning, variable message sign (VMS) or directional signs.
Inventory Forms
The applicable inventory form is required for each new or refurbished structure.
The General Bridge Inventory Information Form shall be used for gantries. A combination of the details contained in the general bridge inventory form and culvert inventory form shall be used for precast box unit bridges until a new form is developed for this specific superstructure type.
The Culvert Inventory Form shall only be used when a bridge has been replaced with a culvert (as per the culvert definition above).

Attachment of Services to Existing Structures
Utility Providers considering attaching services to an existing or new traffic bridge, traffic structure or other road service structure must contact the Asset Manager Structures in their region in the first instance. Below is the approval procedure for attachment of services to structures. Prior to commencement of any installation, a Utility Provider Service Management Agreement is required detailing maintenance, future removal or relocation, responsibility of costs and indemnity. An example of the wording required is attached below.
